Mask
Throughout history, masks have served as powerful tools for exploring and defining humanity, offering a means to inhabit alternate identities. From their practical applications in defense and concealment to their symbolic roles in celebration and judgment, masks have woven themselves into the fabric of cultures worldwide.
In ancient Greek carnivals, masks allowed individuals of all social standings to partake in festivities without the constraints of societal hierarchies. Furthermore, across diverse societies, masks assumed roles beyond mere adornment, acting as conduits for justice or instruments of psychological warfare in times of conflict. Yet, the true significance of a mask remains subjective, shaped by the intentions of the wearer and the context in which it is worn. My illustrations explore the historical use of masks in China, Africa, Native America, and Europe, reflecting my personal understanding of their enduring narratives.
